Getting back on the bike

There are wine tours and then there’s the Riesling Trail. Originally part of the Adelaide to Spalding railway line, the Riesling Trail is a 33-kilometre corridor between Auburn and Stanley Flat that allows you to wind your way through the picturesque Clare Valley on bike or by foot.

It doesn’t matter if you’re an expert cyclist, a beginner or you haven’t jumped on a bike for a number of years, the Riesling Trail is the perfect way to gather your group of friends for a wine tour with a difference. If you don’t own a bike, you can choose from a number of styles, including mountain, leisure and tandem, at You can even choose to book it one way so your bike for a day can be picked up at the other end. Bikes can be hired at very affordable rates; half-a-day (four hours) is $25 while a full day (eight hours) is $40 and includes a helmet, side saddle bag and bike lock.

Beginning at the restored Auburn railway station (now home of Mount Horrocks Wines) in the charming historic town of Auburn, the Riesling Trail winds through vineyards, farmland and several towns and villages, including Leasingham, Watervale and Sevenhill.
