Clare

The town of Clare is located in South Australia’s Mid North region approximately 130 km north of Adelaide. It gives its name to the Clare Valley wine and tourist region. At the 2021 census, Clare has a population of approximately 3,200 people.

Clare is a major township in the Clare Valley. It is an ideal place to stay if you intend to explore the many wineries located throughout the valley. Historically, the town prospered as an important service centre for the surrounding agricultural district.

Today, it is the heart of the Clare Valley and is surrounded by vineyards, native bushland, cereal cropping and sheep farming. It is used as a base for most visitors wanting to explore the Clare Valley and sample the diversity of wines offered in the region.

As one of the larger towns in the region, Clare is an administrative and service centre for the surrounding area. It has two supermarkets, many other specialty stores, two public and two private schools, three hotels, two motels, a caravan park and showgrounds. It has a variety of accommodation options with the Clare Valley well known for its many B’n’Bs.

Clare, as with the rest of the Clare Valley, is becoming known as a key dining destination with restaurants including Seed Clare Valley, Ragu & Co, and Indii of Clare as well-known foodie destinations.
